- TipTop Software Ships Objective-Tcl(tm) and Objective-Browser(tm)
- =================================================================
-
- Bethesda, Maryland, August 10, 1995 --- TipTop Software is proud to
- announce that Objective-Tcl(tm) version 2.0 and Objective-Browser(tm)
- version 1.0 are now shipping!
-
- "Objective-Tcl boosts an already productive environment significantly!
- Truly AWESOME!"
- -- Hadar Pedhazur, Managing Director, Union Bank of Switzerland
-
- "As a tool provider I am always looking for products that dramatically
- increase the developer's productivity as well as enable greater creativity
- in the design and implementation of new apps. The two qualities of
- productivity and creativity are hard to combine, but Objective-Tcl
- simultaneously satisfies both of these quite well."
- -- H. Bret Young, Senior Programmer Analyst, First National Bank of Chicago
-
- Objective-Tcl (ObjTcl), pronounced "Objective-Tickle", is an advanced
- object-oriented environment for NEXTSTEP/OpenStep based on Tcl, the popular
- high-level interpretive language. Objective-Tcl breaks the barrier
- between compiled and interpreted code --- it not only provides the full
- access to Objective-C objects, but also facilitates creating classes and
- implementing methods at runtime! A class can have some methods implemented
- in Objective-C, while other methods are implemented in Objective-Tcl. To
- the (Objective-C/Objective-Tcl) runtime system, it is transparent if a
- method is implemented in Objective-C (compiled) or in Objective-Tcl
- (interpreted).
-
- Objective-Tcl is seamlessly integrated into the NEXTSTEP environment. For
- example, the Objective-Tcl development environment extends the
- InterfaceBuilder functionality by allowing classes to be created and tested
- in IB --- no recompilation or restarting IB to load the new implementation
- is required!
-
- Objective-Tcl promotes rapid prototyping and exploratory programming. In
- addition, Objective-Tcl provides application extensibility which has never
- before been available.
-
- =======================================================================
- Objective-Browser (OB) is a graphical development tool. It allows live
- objects within a running application to be viewed in many object-specific
- ways. OB allows the programmer to easily investigate the structure and
- methods of various objects and classes. For example, methods, instance
- variables, and other object information can be viewed and edited.
-
- To a user, OB appears as a hierarchical browsing tool, similar to the file
- system browser. Each node in the browser typically represents an object
- or some other piece of information (e.g., a method). Each node can have
- any number of subnodes. For example, when looking at an object, instance
- variables or methods appear as subnodes; when looking at a List object,
- contents of the list appear as subnodes; when looking at an interpreter
- object, procedures and global variables appear as subnodes; etc.
-
- OB is extensible. The user can provide object-specific browser nodes and
- custom inspectors for any object in the system. OB can be used from any
- application which is linked with the Objective-Tcl runtime---the browser
- is dynamically loaded when needed.

- TipTop Software is committed to OpenStep. Objective-Tcl and Objective-Browser
- will be released for Solaris/OpenStep, Windows 95/NT/OpenStep, and other
- OpenStep platforms as they become available.
-
- In addition, Objective-Tcl for the GNU Objective-C runtime will be released

-
- Licensing Terms and Pricing
- ===========================
-
- Objective-Tcl 30-day evaluation licenses are free.
-
- Objective-Tcl developer licenses are priced at $199. The price includes
- 30-day complimentary technical support (up to 3 incidents). Additional
- annual technical support can be purchased separately, and is priced
- competitively. However, TipTop Software welcomes bug reports and suggestions.
-
- Runtime distribution licenses are required for end-user products which
- incorporate Objective-Tcl functionality. For widely-distributed applications,
- i.e., shrinkwrap, shareware, and freeware, the cost is max(12*min(199,l),40),
- where l is the list price of the application. For all other (custom)
- applications, the cost is $2388 (i.e., 12*199). Other runtime licensing
- options, e.g., such as royalty-based, are also available.
-
- Full-time students and full-time faculty members may use Objective-Tcl
- for free, under the terms of the educational license!! An educational
- license file can be obtained by registering as an educational user for
- the minimal license processing fee of $20. (We encourage all educational
- users to register.)
-
- Objective-Browser is priced at $199. Free 30-day evaluation license file
- is available from ftp://ftp.tiptop.com/pub/ObjectiveTcl/OB-Eval-LICENSE.text
-
- Educational pricing is available for Objective-Browser.
-
- NOTE: The ObjTcl/OB package is distributed exclusively from ftp.stepwise.com
- and ftp.tiptop.com. You may not redistribute the package. E.g., you may
- not put it on an ftp server.
